Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras are the workhorses of large-site CCTV. A single PTZ can cover an area that would need eight or ten fixed cameras — and it can zoom in on a moving target in real time. That is why every serious warehouse, distribution centre, port, dealership and industrial yard in the UK has PTZs somewhere in the design.
But PTZs are only useful if they are deployed properly. A badly mounted PTZ is worse than no camera at all: it will vibrate, drift, lose auto-tracking mid-motion, and generate footage nobody trusts. This guide walks through what a proper PTZ deployment in a UK warehouse actually involves.
When to use a PTZ (and when not to)
PTZs earn their money in specific scenarios: large outdoor yards, dock and loading-bay areas, aisle intersections in big warehouses, perimeter fence lines with long sight lines, and any operator-monitored control room where somebody is actively watching. They are not the right answer for evidential-only cameras — for that, fixed high-resolution bullets or panoramic multi-sensor cameras are more reliable, because they always cover the same field of view.
A well-designed warehouse CCTV system typically has 80–90% fixed cameras (bullets, turrets, panoramic multi-sensor) and 10–20% PTZs, positioned where operator attention is most valuable.
Choosing the right PTZ for the environment
- Indoor high-bay warehouse — go for 4K resolution, 25x–36x optical zoom, IP66 rated even indoors (dust matters).
- Outdoor yards and perimeters — 4K, 36x zoom, IP67, IK10 vandal rating, IR-optimised night vision to 300m+.
- Loading bays — mid-range 25x zoom with wide-angle preset tour of every bay door, IP66, PoE++.
- ANPR-integrated PTZ — dedicated ANPR variants with narrower field of view and higher shutter speeds.
- Thermal PTZ — for perimeter security in low-light or fog; catches heat signatures at 300m+.
Mounting and power — the bits that break installations
A 4K PTZ camera weighs 4–8 kg. Multiply that by dozens of small motor movements per hour, wind loading on outdoor mounts, and it becomes a mechanical load nobody plans for. Cheap wall brackets flex. Steel pole mounts vibrate at resonant frequencies. Concrete columns move under thermal expansion. The result: image drift, motor wear, and warranty claims.
Proper PTZ installations use rated wall or pole mounts with resonance-dampened cushioning, secured with certified anchor bolts appropriate to the substrate. Cable entry points are sealed against water ingress. And every mount is tested — pushed, twisted, wobbled — at handover, not left to a "shall we see how it goes" moment.
Power is the other silent killer. PTZs need PoE+ (30W) or PoE++ (60W) — a standard 15W PoE port will boot the camera but fail under continuous motor use, causing random reboots that show as unexplained gaps in footage. Every PTZ needs its own dedicated PoE++ port on a business-grade switch, not a consumer injector.
Cabling and network segmentation
Cat6a is the minimum standard for CCTV in modern warehouses — Cat6 is fine at 100m for 4K cameras but leaves no headroom. For runs over 90m, use fibre and a media converter local to the camera. Every cable run should be in containment (dado, conduit or basket), tested end-to-end at handover, and labelled at both ends.
The CCTV network should be VLAN-segmented from the rest of the business network. Cameras and NVRs sit on their own subnet, with firewall rules that allow only the specific ports and IP addresses needed for monitoring. This limits the blast radius if a camera is ever compromised, and — critically — stops CCTV traffic from clashing with EPOS, warehouse management or voice traffic on the same physical wire.
Analytics that earn their keep
- Auto-tracking — the PTZ follows a moving object across its field of view, useful in yards and perimeters.
- Preset tours — the PTZ cycles through a set of positions on a schedule, covering a large area over time.
- Line-crossing and intrusion-zone detection — an alarm fires when someone crosses a defined line.
- PPE detection — the camera flags workers not wearing high-vis or hard hats at pedestrian crossings.
- ANPR integration — number plates captured and matched against white/black lists.
- Loitering detection — an alarm fires when someone stays in a zone for longer than expected.
Analytics run on the camera itself, so nothing sensitive leaves the site unless you choose to send it. That matters for GDPR, and it means the system keeps working even if the internet goes down.
Retention, GDPR and lawful basis
For most warehouses, 30–60 days of retention is a sensible baseline. Some sectors (regulated healthcare, education, financial services) will retain for longer. GDPR requires you to document the lawful basis for CCTV — usually "legitimate interest" for security, evidenced by a risk assessment — and to display appropriate signage.
A subject-access request (someone asking for footage of themselves) must be responded to within one calendar month. Your system needs a way to search, extract and redact footage efficiently. If it takes three days to find yesterday's clip, you have a compliance problem, not a technology one.
A typical PTZ warehouse deployment — the shape of it
A 140-camera deployment in a 25,000 m² distribution centre typically breaks down as: 120 fixed cameras covering aisles, docks and perimeter (bullets, turrets, panoramic); 12 PTZs on loading bays and outdoor yards with auto-tracking after hours; 4 ANPR cameras on entrance/exit; 4 thermal cameras on the perimeter fence. Storage on a RAID NVR with 60-day retention, cloud backup of the critical zones. Total install: about six weeks including cabling, containment, network configuration, camera commissioning and handover.
That is a serious piece of infrastructure. It is also, when done right, a piece of infrastructure that pays for itself the first time it saves you a claim, resolves an incident, or catches a safety issue before an accident.
