Hosted VoIP: a business phone system that lives in the cloud, not in a cupboard
Hosted VoIP replaces the on-premise PBX with a phone system run from UK data centres. Your desk phones, laptops and mobiles connect over your broadband, and every change is made by an engineer in minutes rather than a site visit.
What hosted VoIP is, in plain terms
A traditional phone system is a box on the wall connected to phone lines. Hosted VoIP moves that box into a data centre. Calls travel over your internet connection to the platform and out to the public network from there. The phones on desks look and behave the same; what changes is where the intelligence lives and who can change it.
Atom Voice, the Atom IP hosted phone system, runs on carrier-grade infrastructure in UK data centres with geo-redundant call routing and encrypted signalling. There is nothing on your premises to maintain beyond the handsets and the network they plug into.
Why UK businesses are moving to hosted VoIP now
Openreach is retiring the analogue and ISDN copper network by the end of January 2027. Every business line will be delivered over IP by then, so most companies are choosing to move on their own timetable rather than a forced one.
The second driver is how people work. Staff answer calls at a desk, at home and on the move, and a hosted system gives them one business number across all three without forwarding tricks or personal mobiles.
- No PBX hardware to buy, insure, maintain or replace
- One UK number per user across desk phone, laptop and mobile app
- Add or remove users as headcount changes, priced per user
- Menus, hunt groups and out-of-hours schedules changed within the working day
- Built-in call recording, voicemail-to-email and reporting
- Microsoft Teams calling on the same platform if you want it
What you need on site: broadband, network and handsets
Hosted VoIP is only as good as the connection under it. A voice call uses around 100 kbps in each direction, so bandwidth is rarely the issue; stability and prioritisation are. We check your connection and switching before quoting, and where an office has more than a handful of concurrent calls we recommend business FTTP or a leased line with voice prioritised and 4G/5G failover so a broadband fault does not become a silent phone system.
Handsets are optional. Some teams want a desk phone on every position; others run entirely on laptop softphones and mobile apps. Most end up with a mix, and the platform treats them identically.
Hosted VoIP versus SIP trunking and Teams-only calling
SIP trunking keeps your existing PBX and replaces only the lines. It suits businesses with a recent PBX they are not ready to write off. Teams Phone on its own gives calling inside Microsoft Teams but limited call-centre features and CRM integration. Hosted VoIP gives you the full phone system feature set with Teams calling available on top. We will tell you which fits, and it is sometimes not the one we sell.
Not sure which option fits? Ten minutes with an engineer will tell you.
Tell us how many people need a phone, where they work and what you run today. You get a straight answer on options and cost, not a sales script.

A small business does not need a smaller phone system; it needs the same professional features without the hardware, the long tie-in or the licence block it will never fill. Atom IP sets up cloud phone systems for UK companies from two users upwards.

Running a separate phone system in each location means separate bills, separate suppliers and calls that cannot be transferred between sites. A hosted multi-site phone system puts every office on one platform with one number plan, one admin portal and one support team.

Switching phone provider worries people for good reason: numbers, contracts and go-live day can all go wrong. Atom IP runs migrations as a defined project, from reading your current contract to parallel running on cut-over day, so the business keeps answering throughout.

“Good guys — worked with them to switch over from a previous very good supplier. They have gone above and beyond to understand our needs and bespoke systems to help support our specific needs. Transition over on getting their systems up and running was smooth. As a small business owner, trust and confidence are important to me.”
“We have been using Josh at Atom for a few years now. Service has always been amazing. Just today our router blew up due to a power surge and he came out promptly with a new one to make sure we were back online in time for trading. Would highly recommend.”
“There aren’t many telecom providers that can be described as truly honest and straightforward. Georgia was very well spoken and made me feel my company was in the right hands. Ollie and Josh responded promptly throughout getting my phones and security systems set up. The install was seamless with no drop in connectivity and no technical issues since.”
